In the meeting last night we discussed the importance of photobooks and passed around titles including:

Let Us Know Praise Famous Men by Walker Evans and James Agee

Naked City by Weegee

Photobooks are a unique and very important way to experience photography. They offer up an unmediated story put forth by the photographer, combining elements of information, document, and art. While it is great to know about the work being put forth by publishers like Steidl, Aperture, and Phaidon, it is also important for young photographers to think about making their own books. Websites like Blurb and MyPublisher offer a cheap and easy way to create your own book.

To learn about the thousands of photobooks that have been published in years past check out Artbook or read The Photobook: A History, Vol. I and II by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger (available in the Tisch library).

If you are interested in learning about new and unusual photobooks, check out the blog Little Brown Mushroom started by Alec Soth.

Happy reading!

Traditional film archives face a new role in the world of digital media. So as Magnum Photos (founded by Robert Cappa, Henri Cartier-Bresson and other renowned photographers) began scanning their archives, they decided that it is possible to part with the original prints. Since the archival importance of the prints diminished after their digitization, Magnum decided to sell them and focus on expanding its modern photographic and journalistic endeavors rather than clinging to its past. (Troubling economic times also factored into their decision.)

Check out the NY Times article here, and although the prints are “on the move,” you can still enjoy them at the Magnum website.

The air was incredible – happiness, reflection, pride, and somberness all rolled into one. At the end of the event, attendees snagged American Apparel’s “Legalize Gay” t-shirts… and ending up on their web site as a result!

I have been thinking a lot recently about the power of photographic essays to create change and influence the way the viewer thinks about the world. I think the power of photography now is to show people something they have never seen before and then allowing the viewer to make decisions on how they interact with the world based off of that. These two quotes, one from Edward Burtynsky and the other from Susan Meiselas, both expand on the photographer’s personal journeys to create meaningful photographic works that impact society.

This quote is from the end of Burtynsky’s movie Manufactured Landscapes:

“There are times when I have thought about my work and putting it into a more politicized environment. If I said this is a terrible thing we are doing to the planet, then people will either agree or disagree. By not saying what you should see, that may allow them to look at something that they had never looked at and to see the world a little differently. So I think many people today sit in that uncomfortable spot where we don’t necessarily want to give up what we have, but they realize what we are doing is creating problems that run deep. It is not a simple right or wrong; it needs a whole new way of thinking.” – Edward Burtynsky Manufactured Landscapes.

This next quote is from a video about curating the Open Society Institute’s Moving Walls Exhibit. View the video here.

“… There is the reality that we are all the more linked globally and we have to know about each other and photography gives us that opportunity…

“I don’t go into the field as an advocate, I go into the field to make a discovery. I don’t start with a mission, I start with what is going on, the questions: What is going on? What can I see? What can I show? Conveying this through the photographs. Then it is with whom I partner, if that seems appropriate for that work to have an additional life, which could be a life of advocacy or a life tied to an issue targeted in a very particular way whether to policymakers or to the public. You have to keep documenting at the same time, asking those questions and seeking as I said really opportunities to create possibilities for engagement.

“That’s where the understanding is key. If we are going to be able to build bridges, and I do think photography is all about creating the bridge people still have to walk over it. I think photographers are the people who perceive the bridge as a possibility and that goes back to the hope that people will feel the connection and that connectivity is the opening of the door.” – Susan Meiselas OSI Moving Walls Curator Expanding the Circle: The Engaged Phtoographer

Groups of people gravitated to the shores of the Charles early on the morning of October 17th. Even at that hour, the passion and energy of the competitors was tangible in the sounds of their oars slicing the water and in the strain of their muscles, which one could easily see from the river’s edge or one of the bridges that reached across the Charles.

Coxmen urgently shouted orders to their teammates, and with the shore lapping nearly up to our feet, it was almost as if we were in the boat with them, beating in time against the waves, feeling the rhythm that they steadily maintainted against the glass-like water.

The rowers’ intensity was matched only by the enthusiasm and dedication of the spectators rallying at the shorelines. This diverse group brings as much as the competitors do to the event. Drawn by the festive atmosphere, splendid weather, or the exuberance of the races, there is no limit to who will take part in the Head of the Charles.

Boston-area college and high school students mix with local families and crew enthusiasts from all corners of the world. But with everyone watching and enjoying the races, cheering for the sheer sport as much as for individual rowers and teams, the individual reasons for being at the event become indistinguishable from the grant tradition that is maintianed when so many people gather for this event. Even if it exists for only a few days, the Head of the Charles spirit forms a unique and vibrant community that left us in awe.

Perhaps the rowing was so unifying because it can be appreciated at so many levels. One can support a friend or relative competiting in a race, or one can merely be swept up in the competitive athletic spirit. One can appreciate the artful snaking of boats across the Charles, or one can close one’s eyes and hear the waves dance and feel the crisp autum breeze.

Anyone can contribute to the Head of the Charles, and that is what makes this tradition so spectacular. Whether they treads the shores of the Charles, peer down from a bridge, toil and sweat as they beat their oars in time, or officiate the races, everyone brings their own character to the event. From any point on the river, it is clear that something has taken hold of the Charles. Even the mere echoes of spectators and a distant boat glistening on the shore elude to something out of the ordinary. The air seems a bit fresher, the sun a degree warmer, the water a shade bluer, and your own mood a bit brighter. Upon first witnessing this event, our group was awestruck by its magnificent atmosphere: the dazzling Charles River, the graceful competitors, and the vibrant crowd. But we soon learned that the success of this tradition ultimately stems from people, just like us, who allow themselves to be enmeshed in the Head of the Charles Regatta. Without a diverse crowd of people, there would be no spirit. It is easy to become a part of this event, you merely have to stumble upon it one weekend in October. The challenge is finding anything that compares once you’ve been a part of it.
